Who Would Have Thought that Discussing Cloud Computing
Would Elicit Such Lightning-Striking Reaction...But it Did...

On Wednesday, August 10, the last of the first course of the three in-depth Edutainment Learning workshops was completed with the subject of How Cloud Computing Capabilities Can Save You Time and Money. Our Edutainment style is to combine formal teaching with roundtable discussions, worksheets, digital presentations and real life examples. Our conversation was certainly animated...who would have thought that what is ostensibly a boring, “geeky” topic, would have gotten a group of business people, most of us lay people, so riled up...but that’s just what happened.

Cloud Computing is the next big thing on the Internet. It can change the computing industry as we know it. Cloud Computing enables a user the ability to conduct computing using the Internet and its network to perform computing functions instead of having an onsite computer. There are a host of cost and time-saving efficiencies associated with the Cloud model as well as some risks.

We all found that working, “in the Cloud” can certainly save a business time and money. That’s especially important to a small to mid-sized business--where tying up capital in computer equipment which readily depreciates, is a concern. A lot of discussion ensued as we realized that Cloud Computing has tremendous flexibility in terms of what functions it can provide to a business and, what it can do, is as diverse as the types of businesses that use it. Also realized was that security vulnerabilities go along with the use of this type of computing. Issues such as protocols for backing up data, how extensively should one depend on Cloud Computing, who owns the data on a remote server, were some of the most animated of issues reviewed. We all agreed that the use of this technology for the “masses” is new and that good business judgement has to be on hand when considering just how a business will use, “the Cloud.”
