SEO Approach To Optimizing Your Web Site
You’ve probably heard the term SEO before, but have not really known what it means. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It's the hot topic for online businesses wanting to be number #1 on the the search engine listings because being number one means more traffic to your Web site. Consequently, more traffic can lead to more business for your company. Google, Yahoo!, and MSN are the three most popular search engines and, in this issue, we are going to list five SEO basics that help optimize your Web site.

1. In designing a Web site, consideration must be given to the navigation structure. A sitemap should be the first element constructed before any design takes place. A sitemap is just that; a map that visually shows how the pages within your Web site link together. This will help your Web designer in developing a design that won't interfere with your navigation. It will also prevent any broken links as explained in number two.

2. Links within the Web site must be carefully thought out in advance. Broken links cause search engine spiders difficulty when indexing the site content. Have your Web site designer test all links to make sure all pages are where they are supposed to be within the directory. As for outside links, they don’t have any real effect on placement unless they are linking to another site within your network. Work to build up relevant links to your Web site from separate outside sources such as blogs, forum posts, press releases, article submissions, etc.

3. Once the sitemap is complete, written content will be needed for each page within the Web site. Descriptive content for your business, products and/or services is needed for the search engines to index. The more content that you provide, the more relevance the search engines give your Web site, leading to better placement. If you're not comfortable writing content, hire a copywriter that specializes in developing Web content.

4. To support your page content, create short descriptive bullet points for your metatdata on each page within the Web site. Metadata is content specifically used by the search engines for categorizing the pages within your Web site. This includes the Title, Description, Keyword and H1 "tags". The written content for these metadata "tags" is usually a short sentence or two, or in the case of the keyword metadata, a short list of five to six "keywords". Work with your Web site designer in getting these implemented into the Web site. An example of how they are used is below.

5. Lastly, be sure your Web designer is using "clean code". Bloated and broken code, much like broken links, interfere with the search engine’s ability to properly index a Web site’s content. Have your Web site designer use the validation tools from the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) to determine if any errors may exist within the Web site's code.
