NO SPAM, PLEASE!

Before the Internet became one of life's essentials, there was only one meaning to the word SPAM. Yes, you know it - the delicious canned food which was mostly found next to the Ramen Noodles inside a struggling college student's cupboard. However, the meaning of SPAM has morphed into those unwanted emails that you receive everyday. As a matter of fact, this week's topic will serve SPAM as the main course of discussion.

According to Wikipedia, Spamming is the abuse of electronic messaging systems to indiscriminately send unsolicited bulk messages. Most of the free email providers, such as Yahoo! and AOL.com, have been exposed to the most recognized form of spam. Email spam, also known as bulk email or junk email, is an unsolicited large quantity of email with the sender's identity usually fictitious. This kind of practice has given online marketers a difficult task to overcome; how to have their legitimate email distinguished from junk email.

Why do we rebuke junk email? Usually because of the time and resources involved; time spent on deleting junk email from your mailbox and resources such as hard drive space and processing speed. Another growing factor is the proliferation of phishing emails. Phishing occurs when an individual inadvertently gives away important information because they received a cleverly designed "fake email" supposedly from your bank or credit card company. This fake email then directs the individual to a "fake Web site" where they are asked to provide secure information, usually through a form. All this, in addition to viruses, make opening any email a somewhat hazardous task.

Why are people still sending spam/junk mail? The only reason spammers (people who send spam mail) are still active is because it is free and very easy to generate traffic to your Web site. For your information, spamming violates the Acceptable Use Policy of almost all Internet Service Providers. In the United States, the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 is supposed to regulate spam closely. However, there are still a lot of legal grey areas involved. The important part is to have the knowledge and ability to avoid spam.

As a business, the best way of generating an email list is to add an opt-in feature to your Web site. Opt-in is a feature that basically gives your customer an option whether to receive your email or not. We strongly suggest any online business that is interested in using email marketing to include the opt-in feature to help avoid being tagged as a Spammer. This simple option will most certainly lead to better customers and better customer relations. Isn't that what we all strive for in business?
