Act Boldly

(12/21/2010) Jeff R. Helvin

Act Boldly

"Act boldly and unseen forces will come to your aid."
- Dorothea Brande

I've realized lately that I come across nonchalant about a lot of important elements in my life, but it's not that I don't care about them, it's that I believe in the quote above and experience it's truth quite frequently. For example, if you would have asked me earlier in the year if I expected to have any major life changes this year, such as getting married or buying a house, I would have likely responded that there are significant financial investments in each of those things, and that maybe one of those things could come to fruition if we were lucky. However, certain circumstances changed that caused me to actually further pursue not just one of those things, but both of them (no, my fiance's not pregnant). So, while business has heated up and the holiday season is in full swing, my fiance and I are finalizing wedding plans AND picking out cabinets, countertops and flooring! I guess after a while you realize that if you're waiting for "the right time" that it may never come. Sometimes, if you just act boldly, unseen forces will come to your aid.

The idea of "acting boldly" would be relatable in business to "taking risks." I would be willing to bet that a majority of successful businesspeople would attest to the fact that they had to take a few risks along the way to reach the success that they're experiencing today. Very few people in the world are lucky enough to have success dropped in their laps without having to take a risk on something here or there. Often times those risks dramatically effect their personal lives as well, once again proving the deep ties between your professional and personal life.

I think my fiance may get frustrated with me when we're discussing something important that seems out of our reach, such as a wedding or a house, and I push to pursue it regardless of the fact that I have no idea of the details yet. I'll get questioned on how it can happen when it seems the chips are stacked against us and I just say "I don't know... we'll make it happen." Being logical and practical like I am, you can imagine that doesn't sit too well with her. She wants answers and I don't have them, but I truly believe that if you really want something to happen, you just have to get it started and the rest will fall into place along the way. Don't get me wrong, there will be plenty of work and sacrifice involved, but the end result will likely be the same.

What risks have you taken lately to achieve what you want in life? Are you just sitting by waiting for something to happen, or are you willing to act boldly and trust that unseen forces will come to your aid?
