What Remains for Your Future?

(05/26/2010) Jeff R. Helvin

What Remains for Your Future?

"Just remember - when you think all is lost, the future remains."
- Bob Goddard

Spring is in the air and there is new energy all around. The stock market may be a little down, but for most people I talk to in business, the outlook is still bright. With this, I've been witnessing a lot of change lately and inevitably when things change, it may not always be for the better for everyone involved. What's important to understand, however, is that rather than trying to fight change, it may just require that you make some changes of your own. The quote above may be a little strong for my view as I rarely feel "all is lost," but it's important to focus on what's ahead, rather than looking back.

Being a business owner, I often find myself in the middle of change, whether it's change that naturally occurs or change that we make happen. Regardless of what type of change it is, I strive to make the best of it for everyone it affects because, as I mentioned, not everyone can come out ahead as a result of that change. In order to do this, it's necessary for me to look at the big picture of what we want to result from the change and work toward making that happen. You don't want to make a habit of compromising to the point that the results of the change don't hit the goal you may have originally intended. However, sometimes compromise is what's needed to get everyone on board with the change, ultimately making the change much easier to digest.

The above example is of change that is happening regardless and finding ways to work with the change rather than be resistant. I've also witnessed the opposite scenario in life, not in business, but where a friend was so concerned with the result of change, that she would rather live in a bad situation simply to avoid it. This situation is certainly not unique to her, but it's a great example of when to consider the quote above. The future remains regardless of the decisions you make, but the kind of future you choose to have is still up to you. You can't always control change that happens around you, but you can decide to make your own changes to help make a better future for yourself.
