Embrace the Future

(05/09/2012) Jeff R. Helvin
Embrace the Future

Sign - The Future"The future is made in the present. People either embrace new ideas or they crush them."
- David Lamm

There are many quotes documented in literature that support the idea what you do today will dictate your tomorrow. There are also many conflicting quotes that argue life is short; live in the moment. Depending on who you're talking to, arguing one case or another may be pointless. True to my efforts of blogging for balance, I believe you should live in the moment and take in the wonderful layers of life that exist, however you shouldn't neglect the outcome it may have on tomorrow. Ultimately, it's your mindset that will open or close the possibilities of your future. Do you embrace new ideas and anticipate the exciting ride life has in store, or do you crush them to try and remain in the present where the surroundings are comfortable, even if not favorable?

There's never a shortage of new ideas when running a business. Anything from evolving original ideas to adapt to the ever-changing business to brand new ideas that may revolutionize the way you think about your operations. How we choose to respond to these ideas will certainly dictate the outcome of the future. Not every idea will be as significant as another, but rarely can you predict the true effect it will ultimately have on your future. The key to knowing is to embrace it. There will certainly be some ideas that lead you down a path you may not want to travel, but without embracing it fully, how would you ever know? That's not to say you shouldn't make yourself aware of the potential challenges and try and limit the amount of risk you're exposed to. However, the people that crush new ideas without even a consideration to see them through are often the ones that will find themselves not keeping up with the rest of the world because there's no doubt that the world is changing around us.

It's easy in our personal lives to get comfortable in our day to day routine. Many of us are creatures of habit, even if the habits themselves are not routine. Often times, when this is the case, we will subconsciously crush new ideas as they may disrupt what we're used to and what we feel like we know. For example, with the addition of a baby and the current attention and focus needed for my business, it felt like I couldn't possibly add anything else to my plate. However, I began a workout routine called "Insanity" a couple of months ago and stuck with it through the end of the program. Getting myself in shape was a not a new idea, per se, but doing it now in spite of how much I had going on in my life was a new idea. I decided that I wanted my future to see me in better shape and by doing something now I was going to make sure that was the case. Rather than crushing the idea, I embraced it and have already lost more than 17 lbs. since starting the program.

Whether you embrace new ideas or crush them, what you do today will help mold your future. Which person are you?
