Get Started!

Get Started!

"As long as you can start, you are all right. The juice will come."
- Ernest Hemingway

It's fascinating to me how we sometimes have to prove to ourselves over and over again that if we just get started with something then we'll have the ability to finish it. How well we do at it may be another story, but the "juice" will come nonetheless. This blog is a perfect example for me as it's been on my list to do for nearly a week, and yet practically all it takes to get it done is to get started on it in the first place!

Our daily to-do lists at work may become daunting at times, but if we let the IDEA of the work affect our ability to actually DO the work, then we're really only getting in our own way. I'll be the first to tell you that there are indeed many days where there is more work to do than there are hours in the day to do that work. This isn't every day, however, and eventually you stand a good chance of catching up if you stay diligent and focus your efforts each day. It may sometimes take prioritizing your list, or saying "no" to new things that may not be as critical, but as long as you get started there's a good chance that you can get it done.

This theory is likely even more obvious in our personal lives. Washing our cars, cleaning the house, even getting out of bed every day can sometimes be a challenge, but if you just do it and not dwell on the thought of doing it, then the juice will come! Having recently moved into a new home, there is certainly no shortage of things to do. With how busy we've been at the office, sometimes I'm just tired and unmotivated to start on a new project. Every time I do, however, I get the job done and I feel great about it! How is it that I forget that time and time again?

It doesn't take much more than the decision to get started on something to put the wheels in motion. There may be challenges along the way, but you can never finish something you don't start, so don't let the idea of what's to come keep you from getting it going.
