It's Never Too Late to Revise

(05/28/2013) Jeff Helvin

"It's never too late - in fiction or in life - to revise.'"
- Nancy Thayer

I find it interesting to observe the different extremes in life, from one person to another, and watching the outcomes form from their decisions. For example, I've seen those that seem to be able to buy anything they want, yet never seem to have any money. I've also seen those that have plenty of money saved up, but are never willing to spend any of it on things they say they want. What I find is most challenging about these types of situations is the ability to break the cycle they are in and adjust to a different kind of lifestyle. As humans, we may sometimes forget that at any point in life, it's never too late to revise.

In your professional lives, there's generally a large number of factors that make revisions to your life seem mandatory. Whether it be a change in your schedule, an opportunity for promotion or the unfortunate circumstance of being laid off, each of these events will likely cause a shift in your current lifestyle and provide the need to revise the path you were already on. Although the resulting revision may not always seem positive, there's always an opportunity to reevaluate and revise to a new goal that you can work toward.

Inevitably any revision to your professional life will directly affect your personal life, and vice-versa, so there can be much to learn from either aspect. What's important is to accept that a revision may be necessary and adapt to the change at hand. This certainly isn't to say you should always be willing to abandon your ideals or goals, but understanding that your original path may not be the only way to achieve what you're after, may provide you a much better opportunity to get there. I have personally found that when living in extremes, such as the examples provided earlier, it's instinctively more difficult to revise the path that you're on, even if you feel an overwhelming need to. I choose to have a little more balance in my life and work toward having a more open view of the journey I'm on, in order to ultimately get where I want to be. Who knows? Maybe I'll decide along the way to revise where I'm going and choose a new destination altogether.

Take a look at where you're headed and exercise your ability to make a revision to your life - it's never too late to revise.
