Old Ideas - New Again

(09/30/2009) Jeff R. Helvin

Old Ideas - New Again

"It doesn't matter how new an idea is: what matters is how new it becomes."
- Elias Canetti

As I'm looking ahead in our business, I've realized that we need to focus back on the foundation of the company. This includes personnel development, training manuals for new recruits, a good look at the systems we have in place, etc. In doing this, I've realized that a lot of the ideas I have are much the same of ideas that I had years ago before we even got to where we're at today. When reading the quote above, it really spoke to me. Often as entrepreneurs we feel like we need to come up with the next best thing, be on the cutting edge, continue to do things we haven't done before. And while this may be true, it doesn't mean the idea has to be new. As a matter of fact, some of the most successful things we've implemented recently were things we thought of years ago, we just never found a way to make it happen!

Leaning on the fact that one's professional life intertwines with their personal life, it caused me to look back at some of the "old ideas" that I've had and make them new again! Many of us have goals and aspirations in life, to some degree. Whether it be small achievements to feel good about progress, or what some refer to as "pipe dreams." But have you thought about those ideas recently? It just may be that years ago when you thought of this idea, it was further out of your reach than it is today. Times change, and sometimes what used to be too difficult, or too expensive, may just be an idea away!
