Still Blogging for Balance

Still Blogging for Balance

Typically, I take inspiration from quotes I've read when writing my blogs, but I have a new inspiration in my life that takes precedence so I'm diverting for this blog entry. That inspiration is my daughter Abigail. Since she can't talk yet, I won't be using a quote from her, but rather a look back on where blogging for balance has taken me.

My very first blog keyed on the fact that I feel there is a very strong relationship between your professional and personal life, but that each should stand as a separate entity. I feel that if you want to make the most out of something, you have to be able to focus intently on it, or else you won't reap the full rewards. With that being said, there's much to learn from both aspects of your life that can directly be applied to the other.

I took a four week Paternity Leave from the office that lasted nearly the entire month of January. It was the only time in thirteen years that one of the original founders took that much time away. It took such a significant life event of having a child to really allow me to focus solely on my family for a change. January did not consist of balance at all, but rather allowed me to fully embrace and be consumed with a new path that has been paved in my life. However, three weeks into my time away, I felt myself being pulled back in and starting to share attention with my work life again. Even though I didn't get to completely forget about my professional life for an entire four weeks, I quickly realized the benefits of letting it go for as long as I did, and how the experiences I encountered while away made me that much more prepared for what I was coming back to.

While my leave of absence broke from my concept of balance, it was made possible by my exercise of balance over the last five years. Balancing both my personal and professional lives allowed me buy a home, get married, have a child, and to take the necessary time off to enjoy the many benefits of fatherhood. It's hard work and takes a lot of attention to try and strike the right balance, but the rewards are endless when executed properly.

Now that I'm back to the office, I'll continue to work hard to strike the right balance of being a significant part of my daughter's life, while still focussing enough attention professionally to provide the many things I hope to be able to provide. What's most important is to recognize the lessons I learn both personally and professionally, and apply those lessons appropriately to my entire life.
