Time Doesn't Change Things - You Do!

(02/11/2011) Jeff R. Helvin

Time Doesn't Change Things - You Do!

"They always say that time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself."
- Andy Warhol

I was tempted to save the above quote for the time change coming next month since it seems to fit so well, but the "timing" of this quote in my own life is spot on right now. I recently wrote a blog titled Act Boldly and in that blog I talked about how often times when we start on a path to achieve something we want, unforeseen forces will present themselves to help make it happen. For me, the path to buy a new home and get married seemed much longer than it really turned out to be. Some may say that the timing was right, but really it was the intent to get it done was right. Time didn't change our ability to achieve our goals, we did.

As busy professionals, I think it's safe to say that we often feel like there's rarely enough time in the day to achieve all that we strive for. So when we do finally achieve our small or large goals, was it time that allowed us to do so? Sure, maybe the "timing" was a little better, but it still comes down to the fact that it was us that made it happen in the end. Setting priorities and staying focussed will prove that there is never a better time than now when something really matters.

It's easy to use time as an excuse in any facet of life, but even easier in our personal lives. In business, there's often more outside responsibility, such as bosses, co-workers and clients, but in our personal lives we really only have to answer to ourselves. Sure, we have family members, spouses, kids, etc., but it may be much easier to reason with them and make excuses than it is when you're being paid to get something done.

There's many variations of the beginning of the quote above, such as "time heals all things," "only time will tell," "when the timing is right," etc., but how much time and when the timing is right really comes down to you!
