What It's Worth

What It's Worth

"As important as 'hanging on' is knowing when to let go."
- Sherri Dewitt

Another three day weekend has come and gone, and I was faced with the same dilemma as I have been faced with for years now - since I'm staying in town, do I work to get caught up or do I not work at all and come back refreshed and ready to take on the new week? As usual, since I strive to achieve balance, I chose to do both. The thing to consider is why one chooses to do one or the other, or both. As the quote says above, it's as important to know when to let go, as it is to hang on. So how does one determine that? For me, it's what it's worth that helps me to determine my priorities.

Today, my professional and personal life share equal importance to achieving what I want out of life, so when extra time presents itself, I balance it the best I can. Work has been healthy and opportunity continues to present itself, so it's important to take advantage of it while the opportunity is there. On the other hand, nearing 30 years old presents a critical time in my life where I'm thinking about family and what my future holds for me and those that I care about. So in my situation, "letting go" in either scenario isn't an option as my decisions are based on the fact that both my professional and personal life are important and need attention.

As made popular by the country music artist Kenny Rogers in 1978, "you got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em," and in the hand that life has dealt me today, I'll continue to keep holding all of my cards.
