Prince Knows Quality is Worth the Wait

(03/07/2014) BannerView Staff

Two icons of entertainment got together the other night. Arsenio Hall played host to the purple one, Prince, who was ready to bring the crowd to its feet. He also sat down to offer insight regarding his song writing process; a process we could all do well to emulate.

“One of the things that we try to do, though, is wait until we have other songs that go together with our favorites. That's why it takes a long time to come out with albums these days. You know, not being under contract, there's no rush.” - Prince

We live surrounded by a constant flow of ones and zeros. Within that flow, an army of media combatants bombard the general public with their version of the news. This version may be factual. It may not. What matters most is, they were the first to publish.

What CNN started back in the 80s, a 24/7 news source, has evolved to micro-epidemic proportions. Newsfeeds are no longer a ticker at the bottom of a television screen. We receive tweets, texts, likes and shares (not to mention granddad’s trusty stand-by, email) on an up-to-the-latest-minute basis. The problem is, my media flow is now becoming a repetitive loop of “been there, done that.”

It’s time to re-introduce quality. To do that, it takes time. Like Prince said, “there’s no rush.” Review your content marketing program. Your publishing calendar shouldn’t be so loaded as to cause the content released to be of subpar levels.

As content publishers, marketers and media agencies, we can take a step back and decide if that infographic is really informative, or that blog article on SEO contains any new techniques, or tweeting your latest whereabouts offers your followers value. Let’s refrain from making cyberspace a virtual landfill.

NOTE: I understand the irony of writing an article that advocates producing less quantity and more quality.
