Social Engineering is the New Hack

(12/01/2015) Giovanni Haro

We all go through this. You call your financial institution or your insurance company or any place with your vital information and you always get the same response. Something along the lines of:

“We need to ask you a few questions to verify your account”

Most of us have busy lives; work, kids, life events. Sometimes we grow weary of answering the same questions over and over. Even when we speak to the same person multiple times, we think:

“You know it’s me. Why do you keep asking?!”

We all have those days where life is just so busy. The last thing you want is to wait patiently to accomplish the things you do on a routine basis. But that's just it. It's routine.

You ever wondered why institutions that hold your personal data ask so many questions?

The simple answer is HACKERS. No, not the ones you see in movies or tv, where they sit down, type things that you usually can't see on the screen, saying things that make no sense (especially to people in IT) and steal all your precious data in a blink of an eye while you (unsuspecting victim) are now being questioned by authorities for being somewhere you never even heard of thinking, "What just happened?"

Enough paranoia fuel. Unfortunately, the above isn't the case. It all comes back to you and your routine, as I mentioned. It can be as simple as a phishing email that looks like it's from your bank, needing you to log in (banks will never do this) or something more sophisticated, like knowing your every day life better than you do.

Scary right? It is a reality we must all come to terms with. Even our favorite social media sites know more about us than we do (as well as all your friends and friends of friends). To put it simply; knowing is the battle and knowing how to use what we know is just icing on the cake.

The icing is my favorite part of the cake and it’s the same for the people trying to take your information! At BannerView.com, we get to know you. If someone calls us and it isn't you, we take it very seriously. Just as you take your business and information seriously.

BannerOS is the business of helping businesses. It may sound confusing but we take the confusion out of website development and helping your business grow. The Vault also provides the latest state of the art security so you can rest easy.

So stay alert. Next time you are at an ATM, watch your back. Check your credit reports and statements. Keep your info to a minimum on social media. Lastly, a thanks to the hard working people protecting your information by asking the same questions each time.

Questions are the answers! Always be aware and help yourself to our tools and site development technology!
