Constants Aren't

(08/08/2012) Jeff Helvin

"Constants aren't.'"

- John Peers

I remember when I was young there were certain phrases or sayings that really bothered me. They were such phrases as "same difference" or "never say never." As my little mind was developing, I had a hard time understanding the cleverness of a play on words and the idea of contradiction. How could two things that were different be the same? I even figured out at the time that there could be such a thing as having the same difference, but only when talking about two math equations where each subtraction problem yielded the same result. Anything beyond that was more than I could wrap my head around. Add a phrase like "never say never" and it made even less sense! Why would someone that is suggesting you don't use the word never, use it themselves? As I got older I began to realize that these were just clever sayings that people could easily remember. Now I've come across yet another one of those clever sayings, "constants aren't," which I interpret as saying consistencies in life may not always be consistent within your own life.

As the founder of a company that is now nearly 13 years old, I can attest that there are very few constants that you can rely on as you grow and evolve. We've been fortunate to have three key members of our team that have survived the journey thus far, which seems to have been the only true constant that remains in our business. We were forward thinking in our efforts when we started the business, and more than a decade later we find ourselves back on the path in which we originally began. This certainly isn't to say that we haven't continued to evolve as a company, but it can help point out that even if today we are still focussed on what we started 13 years ago, it hasn't been a constant as the world continues to change all around us.

Life outside of my profession has certainly not been a constant either. As I look at my 33rd year of celebrating life, I can look back and see the many awesome adventures I've been on. Other than the constant of getting older (let's hope that remains a constant for many years to come), nearly every other major event I can think of has changed the course of where I'm at today. Starting a business, meeting my wife, buying a house,

having a baby and many other little things in between have all contributed to making constants nearly non-existent in my life.

As much as I appreciate consistency and balance, it's the not knowing what lies ahead that makes life so exciting. It's important to recognize that constants aren't constant and you should be prepared to take on what life brings you next.
