Find Your Balance

(10/23/2012) Jeff Helvin

"Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it.'"
- Lucy Maud Montgomery

helvin102412Anyone that follows my blog hopefully understands that I strive for a balance in all things that I do. I think it's also important to point out as I have in the past that balance does not always mean equal parts of one thing compared to another, but rather that, what happens in one part of your life, affects other parts of your life. Where you find your harmony is almost guaranteed to be different than another's, but it's also important to understand that whatever balance you find today may be different than what it will be tomorrow. If you assess today whether or not you have the kind of balance you're looking for, remember that "tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it."

For the first nine months of my daughter's life, I worked out a schedule that would allow me to balance my existing responsibilities at the office and my new responsibilities as a father at home. I worked remotely the first part of the day from my home office caring for my newborn while my wife worked her part-time job. I was able to be very affective with work as the newborn mostly slept and kept entertained with all the new discoveries there were in her world. Once my wife returned home, I would go to the office and focus strictly on work. When I returned home, I would focus strictly on my family. This allowed me to lay a great foundation for a balanced personal and professional life. As my daughter got older and started demanding more attention, this scenario was no longer going to be efficient. Something was bound to suffer, whether it be work or being an effective father. We then learned that we have another daughter on the way, so now it's time to refocus my immediate efforts on the business in preparation for the new adventures our second child is going to bring us.

The quote referenced above refers to having a fresh tomorrow, that is free of mistakes that may have been made in the past. Although I'm fortunate to say I don't feel like I've made any mistakes in my example, the fact remains that tomorrow is a new day, and where you find your balance today, may not be where you find your balance tomorrow. If you haven't found a good balance that provides you the harmony you're after in your life, then tomorrow is a new chance to go after it!
