Situation Killer

(10/29/2013) Jeff Helvin

"Surely this must be an ancient proverb: If the situation is killing you or your company, get the hell out." - Hugh Prather

situation killerWhile some are currently gearing up for the quickly approaching holidays, others (like me) are already knee deep in the holiday season! Now the father of two young daughters and the husband of an active wife, family festivities are in full swing!

Since the beginning of the month, we have been to two birthday parties, searched for costumes, got Halloween pictures taken, went to a Halloween festival and are now preparing for a pumpkin carving party we like to host each year while celebrating my wife's birthday. All of this during the baseball postseason, my daughter's soccer classes and miscellaneous family get-togethers certainly adds up to a lot!

When this sort of thing starts to happen, it's important to take an inventory of what you're doing and make sure the situation doesn't become overwhelming. In the case of our family, we have worked hard to balance the things that are most important to us and keep in control of our schedule and activities. It can still become overwhelming at times, but it's important to reevaluate when necessary and make adjustments where needed.

This same concept naturally applies to our professional lives as well. We can often try and do too much, ultimately providing the opposite result of never really getting anything done. When we're chasing after too many things and get wrapped up in everything we're trying to accomplish, we can easily lose sight of what we were after in the first place.

These situation will often sneak up on us and be happening when we don't even know it! Take a deep breath and analyze what all you're trying to do today and make a decision on whether or not you're still after what you set out to do in the first place. You may find yourself in a situation that is killing you, and it could be time to get out!

Here's the Point:
Think about any situations you may be in make sure you're in control. You may need to kill a situation if the situation is killing you!
