The Future Starts Now

(09/02/2009) Jeff R. Helvin

The Future Starts Now

"The best way to predict the future is to invent it."
- Alan Kay, a computer scientist who worked at Apple and Hewlett-Packard

I've been blogging for about 6 months now, and as I explained in my very first blog, the quotes that I use for inspiration come from the book "What's Next: Creating the Future Now." In this blog, I deviate from the book, but not the concept in the quote that inspired this message. Mark Cenicola, while reading one of the many articles he reads throughout any given week, emailed me this quote and it fits right in with the theme.

My most recent blog article, A Little Change Can Do a Lot of Good, I talked about how small changes in what you're doing can have a lasting positive effect that maybe you never thought about. With that said, how much positive impact can you make on your life if you were thinking more about it? I recently took a look at the many things I have control over in my life, such as finances, relationships, activities, etc. and found that there are a lot of little things I can do to help setup a better future for myself and those around me. It's easy to take advantage of an opportunity that presents itself, but the key is to find a way to create opportunities that can benefit me in the short and long term. So, rather than trying to predict or accept what my future has in store for me, I like to think I'm inventing it as I go.

Whether good or bad, the decisions that we make today are shaping our future, so it's important to not take any of them for granted. What may seem relatively small now, can make a huge impact on the future you invent for yourself.
