Control the Spin

(07/07/2010) Jeff R. Helvin

Control the Spin

"When you're stuck in a spiral, to change all aspects of the spin you need only to change one thing."
- Christina Baldwin

The heat is on and I am feeling it! I'm not just talking about the Las Vegas weather, either, I'm also talking about the endless amount of "things to do" in my business and personal life. When it comes to business, I always say that being busy is a good problem to have, but when there's just as much to do at home, it can become a little much to balance at times. I blame nobody other than myself for this false sense of needing to tackle everything at once, but I feel like I can't help it as I'm energized with opportunity. Nothing much has changed recently, other than the longer days that summer brings so I've recently realized that I'm in a "get it done" spiral that I need to get myself out of before I give in and give up on it all!

Even though the summer months are typically slower in our line of business, there never seems to be a lack of things to do. In fact, from an operational perspective, it seems like the summer months are the busiest! With that being said, it's easy to quickly find myself overcommitting and eventually spinning out of control of what I'm responsible for. Looking back over the past few weeks, I realize how many hours a day I'm working compared to other times of the year, yet still feel like I'm never catching up.

When work requires more attention, it's only natural that my home life tends to suffer. I find that this time of year inspires me to want to try new recipes, be more active, rearrange and organize things, etc. But combine more attention to work with wanting to do more at home and things can spiral out of control in a hurry!

The quote above made me realize that it's time to take back control, both at work and at home. If I can make one small change (such as prioritizing what is time-sensitive, or what really matters) then I can change all aspects of the spin and not get burned out before I get to the finish line!
